An e-mail from Henry Ellis sensei
A few days ago we received the following e-mail from Henry Ellis sensei in response to a recent blog that was mentioning an article written by him. With his permission, we decided to share his reply with the entire Aikido Journal community:
“I would like to say thank you for adding my article Is Aikido a Martial Art? and links to the Aikido Journal News Letter. Unfortunately very few Aikidoka read the article as the views of Aikido old and new by a student of Aikido for 50 years. I have had many responses, some good and some rather unpleasant. I think perhaps the email I received from Jiro Nakazono Sensei speaks volumes with his statement ‘Sensei Ellis, you truly lived through the golden age of European Budo!’
My best wishes to you and all at Aikido Journal for 2007.
Kind Regards
Henry Ellis
Co- Author of Positive Aikido.”

Perhaps Ellis Sensei exaggerates, perhaps he doesn’t; but his article was thought-provoking and sincere. There are many blind alleys we can drift into that make our daily practice one of ease. Anyone who incites us to re-examine ourselves for the possible loss of shinken in our art is to be praised. I know my own practice deserves periodic re-examination, and I doubt that I am alone. — Rick Triplett
