  • Aiki Secrets: Six Precepts and the Dynamic COB

William Dockery / Aspiring Press (2011)

    Aikido / Technical

Summary: (From the Publisher): William B. Dockery’s journey into the science and soul of martial arts began more than two decades ago. Through the years he has dedicated himself to studying and understanding multiple disciplines of martial arts encompassing a broad range of proficiencies, skill sets, and goals. Whether they are combat oriented, grappling driven, balance inspired, or spiritual/centering practices, he has used his experiences in them all to formulate a groundbreaking methodology for Aikido unlike any other ever conceived or taught. And the best part is that it can be easily and successfully applied to other martial arts as well. The key to this new understanding is the physics of the human body, otherwise known as kinesiology. By breaking down the science of the physiological, mechanical, and psychological mechanisms associated with human movement and applying them to martial arts disciplines, Dockery bridges these two worlds in a revolutionary guide that will forever change the way martial arts are approached and taught. Written using his personal notes during his intermediate training in Tomiki Ryu Aikido in conjunction with his growing understanding of kinesiology, Dockery’s book is the perfect compliment to the studies of all intermediate students—even if their discipline isn’t Aikido. By understanding how the body works in motion, he reasons, students can grasp the concepts taught to them rather than simply mimicking behavior. And by translation, an understanding of one’s own COB inherently brings about an understanding of others, enabling the ability to manipulate an opponent’s COB with directed intent, thereby reducing the time it takes to learn new techniques, yielding increasingly successful results. “Aikido is not magical,” Dockery says, “it is bound by the laws of physics.” His new expertise is teaching others how to improve their practice by providing the mental focus necessary to engage their mind along with their body. His approach is based on the six key precepts of No-Line and the 20, Parallelism, The Cam (S and C), Sagittal Plane, Daito Hands and Lever Arms, and Aiki-Age, Aiki Sage. These precepts lay the foundation for the most revelatory chapter: The Secret to Aiki. Those willing to engage these fundamental teachings in a meaningful manner will achieve greater results than those without due to this melding of mind and body versus the rote mechanics of current methods. With over two decades of experience, Dockery’s lifelong dedication to studying and better understanding multiple disciplines of martial arts has lead to a commitment to helping others with their devotion as well. An extraordinary resource that is as applicable to sports and dancing as it is to all martial arts, Dockery unlocks a revolutionary approach that transcends any current methods in use. Presented in a no-nonsense, layman’s approach that is easy to understand and apply, Aiki Secrets: Six Precepts and the Dynamic COB forever changes the paradigm.

  • Aikido and Spirituality

Margaret Greenhalgh / VDM Verlag (2010)

    Aikido / Spiritual

Summary: From the Publisher: Among the modern martial arts most often mentioned in relation to "spirituality" is the Japanese martial art aikido, created by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 -1969) in the 1940s. He described aikido as an art of peace and viewed its practice as a spiritual endeavour. Academic observers, however, have cast doubt on the authenticity of spiritual content in the martial arts while others consider that spirituality is not possible outside the confines of established religion. This book refutes these arguments by exploring in detail aikido's relationship to Japan's spiritual traditions. Drawing extensively on Ueshiba's discourses and writings, it compares the aikido world view and practice methods with those of four belief systems influential in Japan - Daoism, Zen Buddhism, Shingon Mikkyo and Shinto. The book shows how Ueshiba pierced the meaning of these traditions and was able thereby to synthesise their spiritual practices creatively. It also sheds light on various sources of confusion surrounding spiritual aspects of the martial arts and should interest martial arts' practitioners and anyone concerned more widely with new forms of spirituality.

    Ellis Amdur / edgework.info (2009)

    Aikido / Anecdotal / Biographical / Historical / Philosophical

Summary: From the Author/Publisher's Website: Ellis Amdur's writing on martial arts has been groundbreaking. In this volume, Amdur has radically reworked his iconoclastic essays first published on the website of Aikido Journal. Here, he attempts to establish the existence of something all but lost in Japanese martial arts -- a sophisticated type of training, encompassing mental imagery, breath-work, and a variety of physical techniques that offered the practitioner the potential to develop skills sometimes viewed as nearly superhuman. Commonly referred to as "internal training," and usually believed to be the provenance of Chinese martial arts, Amdur asserts that not only was it once common among many Japanese martial traditions, but elements of such training still remain, passed down in a few martial arts -- literally "hidden in plain sight." As always, Amdur reminds us that this is a human endeavor and he provides vivid, even heartbreaking portrayals of some of the great practitioners of these skills, men who devoted their lives to an obsessive pursuit of power.

Those are temporary goals. There is nothing wrong with getting new cars or becoming CEO, or whatever else pleases you, but don't confuse the two. Achieving those things, we use skills that can be learned, whereas awakening does not result from education, a gathering of knowledge. This is the very highest art form: the art of letting go of 'doing' and dropping into resting in the awareness itself. This 'shift' is the perfect and complete unification of all aspects of life, of truly knowing and experiencing at the same time; suddenly, 'waaa!' It all comes together.

    Aikido / Philosophical / Spiritual

Summary: From the Publisher: "The Heart of Aikido: The Philosophy of Takemusu Aiki" takes the reader on a spiritual journey straight to the essence of Aikido, in the words of the great Founder himself. Ueshiba, affectionately known as O'Sensei, or "Great Master," devoted himself to the promotion of peace and expression of universal human values, and spent a substantial part of his life imparting and teaching these values. Taken largely from transcripts of lectures he gave, The Heart of Aikido draws on the essence of the Founder's philosophy and spirituality based on the Shinto religion, and his beliefs on the divinity of the true self and the universe. His teachings also emphasize the importance of harmony in Aikido, and how ultimately humans can foster a peaceful society by dispelling aggression through such harmony.
