(Scheduled for retail release in 1st quarter 2008) Translation by John Stevens. "The Secret Teachings of Aikido" is a collection of the spiritual teachings of the Founder. In this book, Morihei Ueshiba explains how Aikido is both the spirit of love and the study of that spirit. The author reflects on the rich and varied landscape of Aikido philosophy, discussing how Aiki is the marvelous functioning of breath, and how, through diligent use of Aikido's breathing techniques, the practitioner can achieve true harmony.

This is a truly superb and important book for those who want insight into Aikido as O-Sensei saw it. Since these are translations of his own words it may be some of the best insight into the depths of Aikido that O-Sensei traveled.

There is no discussion of technique, no how-to-throw an opponent; the book is about Aikido as a personal philosophical and spiritual practice. It starts with the words “Aikido is the study of spirit…” and never stops.

Delightfully, O-Sensei’s writing flows like verse. I often got the feeling I was reading poetry.
