Noriaki Inoue: Aikido's Forgotten Pioneer

Morihei Ueshiba is widely recognized as the founder of aikido, a modern Japanese martial art with a strong spiritual emphasis. What is known only to a few, however, are the contributions of Ueshiba’s nephew, Noriaki Inoue, to the development of the precursor of aikido called “Aiki Budo.”

Noriaki Inoue was raised in the Ueshiba home in Tanabe in the early part of the 1900s. He was with Morihei when his uncle studied Daito-ryu Jujutsu in Hokkaido under Sokaku Takeda. Inoue also became a devout member of the Omoto sect having extensive personal contact with Onisaburo Deguchi, and developed a deep spiritual understanding paralleling that of Morihei. When Morihei taught his budo in Tokyo and Osaka during the 1920s and 30s, Inoue served as his senior assistant playing a pivotal role in the creation of Aiki Budo.

This one-of-a-kind DVD presents an in-depth look at the life and art of one of Aikido's preeminent masters, Christian Tissier, 7th dan. Having begun Aikido as a boy in France in 1962, Tissier spent eight years in Japan at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo training with many of the art's top masters. On his return to his native France, he brought back a new kind of Aikido that soon captured the imagination of the Aikido world in his country and practitioners throughout Europe. Tissier is at present the leading figure in the FFAAA organization, one of France's two large Aikido associations. The 3rd Friendship Demonstration was held in Tokyo on September 6, 1987 and features four in-depth lecture demonstrations on martial arts studied by Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba prior to the creation of aikido.

The first demonstration presents Kashima Shinto-ryu, a traditional Japanese martial art school with a 500-year history whose sword has a clearly demonstrable influence on the development of Morihei Ueshiba's Aiki Ken. 3rd Friendship Demonstration, Part 2

The 3rd Friendship Demonstration was held in Tokyo on September 6, 1987 and features four in-depth lecture demonstrations on martial arts studied by Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba prior to the creation of aikido.

Part two begins with an in-depth demonstration by Soke Kyoju Dairi Katsuyuki Kondo of Daito-ryu aikijujutsu. This extremely important jujutsu system was refined in the late 19th century and disseminated by the famous Sokaku Takeda, the main technical influence on Morihei Ueshiba. Kondo Sensei and his group demonstrates scores of Daito-ryu techniques that highlight the rich curriculum of this school.

Bio of Katsuyuki Kondo

Katsuyuki Kondo was born in Tokyo in 1945. He began his training in Daito-ryu aikijujutsu as a teenager under Tsunejiro Hosono and later Kotaro Yoshida, a friend and senior in Daito-ryu to Morihei Ueshiba. With an introduction from Yoshida, Kondo made periodic visits to Hokkaido starting in 1961 to practice under Tokimune Takeda Sensei. He continued his training under the Daito-ryu headmaster for 32 years.
