Shoji Nishio: Nishio Aikido, Vols. 1 & 2

Gyakuhanmi Katatedori / Aihanmi Katatedori

Shoji Nishio Sensei is one of aikido’s most innovative teachers incorporating elements from his extensive experience in judo, karate, iaido, and jojutsu in his martial-oriented interpretation of aikido. Nishio Sensei has also developed an elaborate series of bokken, jo, and iaido variations of key techniques as part of his comprehensive system. Part one covers the complete series of gyakuhanmi katatedori techniques. The techniques demonstrated include: kaitennage, ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, shihonage, yonkyo, iriminage, kotegaeshi, sotomakikomi.

Shomenuchi 1 / Shomenuchi 2

Shoji Nishio Sensei is one of aikido’s most innovative teachers incorporating elements from his extensive experience in judo, karate, iaido, and jojutsu in his martial-oriented interpretation of aikido. Nishio Sensei has also developed an elaborate series of bokken, jo, and iaido variations of key techniques as part of his comprehensive system. Each DVD in this series two remastered programs from our Nishio video series from 1996-97. The visual quality of these DVDs is outstanding!

Part three of the Nishio Aikido video series is part one of a detailed presentation of shomenuchi techniques. Nishio Sensei demonstrates side-escape techniques followed by explanations of shihonage, ikkyo, gokyo, irimi, and kotegaeshi. All the techniques are demonstrated empty-handed and using the ken and jo.

Part four of the Nishio Aikido videotape series is the second part of the presentation of shomenuchi techniques. Covered are numerous side-entry techniques including irimi, kotegaeshi, and nikyo; the furikaburi series covers irimi, kotegaeshi, and sankyo. Finally, many applied techniques (oyowaza) are demonstrated.

Yokomenuchi / Ryotedori-Sodedori

Part five of the Nishio Aikido videotape collection presents numerous techniques from yokomenuchi attacks including: shihonage, irimi, kotegaeshi, ken & jo, jo tai ken, ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, gokyo, and koshinage. Nishio Sensei explains each technique in detail.

Part six of the Nishio Aikido series covers a variety of ryotedori and sodedori techniques. The techniques demonstrated are: shihonage, ikkyo ura, katate series, nagewaza, kokyunage, ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, gyaku kime, shime, kirihanashi kotegaeshi, ken tai ken, and jo tai ken.

Katadori Menuchi / Aikido Toho Iai, Parts 1 & 2

Nishio Aikido, Volume 7: Katadori Menuchi

Part seven presents katadori menuchi techniques including warmup exercises, katadori ikkyo, katadori menuchi nikyo, katadori menuchi sankyo, katadori menuchi koshinage, katadori menuchi shihonage, katadori menuchi gyakukimenage, katadori menuchi irimi, and katadori menuchi kotegaeshi. The demonstrations also include the ken tai ken and ken tai jo applications of the above techniques.

Nishio Aikido, Volume 8: Aikido Toho Iai, Part One

Part eight covers the first seven of the Aikido Toho Iai forms which are unique to Nishio Aikido. The Iai kata and the taigi techniques that inspired them shown are Shohatto maegiri, Kiriage, Uke nagashi, Ushirogiri, Zengogiri, Tsukaosae, and Tekubiosae.

Nishio Aikido, Volume 9: Aikido Toho Iai, Part Two

Part nine continues the presentation of the remaining eight forms of Aikido Toho Iai which are unique to Nishio Aikido. The Iai kata and corresponding taigi techniques covered are Kawashi tsuki, Tsukekomi, Tsume, Sanpo, Shiho, Nukiawase, Todome, and Tomesuemono.

Shoji Nishio: Aikido - Yurusu Budo

This technical volume is written by one of the greatest teachers of the postwar era, Shoji Nishio Sensei. This is Nishio Sensei’s first book and is presented in bilingual, Japanese-English format for an international readership. This beautiful volume contains hundreds of technical photos illustrating Nishio Sensei’s empty-handed techniques along with detailed explanations and commentary on their interrelationships with the ken and jo, and the deeper principles of aikido. The English translation of the text is by Derek Steel.

Shoji Nishio Bio

Shoji Nishio was born December 5, 1927 in Aoyama Prefecture. He enrolled at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in 1951 and began to instruct around 1955. Nishio Sensei had a broad background in judo, karate, iaido, jojutsu and other arts and incorporated elements from these disciplines into his aikido. He achieved the rank of Aikikai 8th dan.

Nishio taught in northern Europe, America, France, Germany and other countries. He was also active in overseeing branch dojos in many different parts of Japan until his passing in March 2005.
