The Shin Ryu Dojo is the only location in Colorado where the teaching is actively in the lineage of the founder of Hakkoryu Jujutsu. The chief instructor is Dr. Philip A Schechter. Dr Schechter is a sixth dan master instructor with the title of Menkyo Kaiden Shihan Sandaikichu. (licensed master instructor of Hakkoryu's deepest mystery and a lineage holder "Third Pillar of the Art". He is one of the most senior teachers in North America and he has maintained a strong relationship with Nidai Soke Okuyama and the Hakkoryu Hombu Dojo in Saitama City in Japan. He has personally had multiple 1:1 "renshi" reviews with Nidai Soke Okuyama and first became Shihan in November of 1993.
The teaching at the Shin Ryu Dojo is exactly as one would find in the Hombu Dojo. The traditional system of White Belts and Black Belts is honored and practiced in the Dojo. Of course, after a Hakkoryu practitioner achieves 5th Dan and the title of Menkyo Shihan, he wears the distinctive purple belt of Hakkoryu Masters.
The philosophy of teaching is to pass along all knowledge as soon as a student disciple is able to absorb the teaching. Dr. Schechter is honored to have three of his students receive their Shihan training directly from Nidai Soke. They are Greg Reinhart Shihan of Phoenix, Joe Geisendorfer Shihan (who leads the practices at the Denver branch of Shin Ryu Dojo ) and Chad Myler, who teaches at the Edwards Colorado branch.
All students are accepted based on their willingness to become a student of Hakkoryu and to follow the guidelines and regulations of Hombu Dojo. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay for their training.
It is the hope and prayer of Dr. Schechter that all of his students will someday be able to train at the Shihan level with the Soke Sensei. He is currently hoping to expand a pilot program to assist interested practitioners who live outside of Colorado to work with him and achieve true training in Hakkoryu. He should be contacted directly for more information about this program.
