I am finding it hard to track down reliable information (in English) on Shoji Nishio Sensei's martail arts history. If anyone knows the answer to any of these questions please let me know.

1) Which styles of iaido did Nisho Sensei study and when?
2) Where did Nishio Sensei start teaching Aikido after he left the Hombu dojo?
3) Where and how long did Nishio Sensei study the jo?

Any leads on interviews would be helpfull as well. Thanks for the help.

Check out this website about him. It also references a past article in Aikido Journal about him, which you can probably back order.

And Nishio Sensei's own webpage:

Thanks for your replys but I am looking for more specific information than the two articles I have found. Also Nishio Sensei is still affiliated with Aikikai but it is obvious that his style is a major departure from the standard honbu style. I am trying to find out how and when this departure took place. Any information would be helpful even Japanese ones.
Thanks for your help.

Hello DOT,
Nice to meet you and thanks for the help and info. Just to give you alittle info on my training here in Japan I practice in Shiga prefecture which has mostly Nishio Aikido (although I believe there is one Aikikai hombu based style down in Otsu city. I have begun my quest for information on Nishio Sensei becasue I was hearing alot of condradicting information from people I train with and from the internet and I am trying to figure out the "truth". I am also fortunate enough to train with a number of people who have been associated with Nishio Sensei for a long time. This being the case I am able to confirm alot of things through my teachers and with Nishio Sensei directly (he comes to Shiga about 3 times a year).

However I am trying to find out as much info as possible before I talk to my teachers so that I know what questions to ask and so I will be familiar with names, dates, places ect. that they might respond with.

Sorry for such a lengthy introduction. So here are some specific questions/concerns of mine. You mentioned that Nishio Sensei had 54 dan gradings. I have read this as well (I think on AikidoFAQ) however I am not sure how they all add up. He has a 8th dan in Aikido; a 8th dan in Iaido; and I believe a 4th dan in Judo (I say this because he mentioned in an interview that he stopped practicing Judo after 4th dan). So if I am correct so far that is 20 dan grades so far. So we have 34 more dan grades to go. I am not sure about his Karate dan but I have heard that he reached 3 or 4 dan and then started Aikido and never returned to his dojo. I have also heard mentioned that he trained in Kendo (I believe you said 8th dan) but I am not sure when he trained or where. Where did you here this from? Also as far as the Jodo is concerned does he hold any dan rankings?

Also I would like to clarify a statement I made earlier. When I refered to Nishio Sensei "leaving" the Aikikai Hombu dojo I only ment physically. I am sorry if I was I was not clear. And as for my question about where he began to teach after teaching at the Hombu dojo I can add this. He taught at Toyo University for awhile (exact dates unknown). In 1973 he relocated to Shiga prefecture for one year at the request of one of my teachers (Yoshimoto sensei) who began his training with Nishio Sensei in Tokyo as a university student. I am not sure when Nishio sensei opened up his own dojo in Yokohama but it must be sometime after 1974 since this is when he returned to Yokohama from Shiga. However I am sure that there is no longer a Yokohama dojo although Nishio sensei does teach once a week at the Saitama dojo.

DOT I would really appreciate any information you,or anyone else, has concerning there subjects. Also if you dissagree with anything I have said so far please feel to correct any mistakes I have made or raise your own questions. Hopefully we can figure things out.

thanks again,
Todd

DOT,
I have been training in Nishio Style for about the past 2 years (not very long). Honestly I am not trying to "qualify" anyone, I am just curious. It has occured to me that I will not be Japan forever and it would be better to sort out my questions here rather than back in the states. On a different level I am trying to see Nishio sensei's Aikido from his vantange point (that is from the other styles that have influenced him) as well as try to learn alittle bit more about his training history to see what worked for him. I am sorry you took all of my questions the wrong way.

Regards,
Todd

Nishio sounds like a very interesting teacher! Does he give seminars in europe? Any details?

I am very interested in iaido. Are there iaido schools that practise a vigorous form of iaido? The reason I ask is because in the iaido classes I have seen the emphasis was on meditation, bowing and tying the knot in the belt. I respect these things but personally I would like something more vigorous...any info?
