A fellow I was conversing with said he practices Daito-Ryu in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He says the style is Hako Hokai with a Mr.Okabayashi Shogen. Is this legitimate? He also said he was a student of Tokimune Takeda but then split off from him due to "politics." I was not aware of any such organization, and was only aware of Roppokai and "main-line" Daito-Ryu, that being the Daitokan, in the form of a couple study groups that are present in the USA, neither being present in Michigan. I found this website http://www.solacewarriors.com/koryukan/main.html which lists more info, but it seems to only acknowledge daito-ryu history up to the point of Tokimune Takeda, then stopping at Okabayashi Shogen who it says then "inherited" the art. Is this for real? It seems suspicious. Is this one of the sons of Tokimune that has claimed he is the rightful heir but does not actually have legitimacy?...

There is a "study group" under the the Hakuhokai in Ann Arbor, MI. "Study group" fits well since Okabayashi is only able to visit once a year or so. The majority of the AA folks have aikido backgrounds and have been working on DR fundamentals since '97 or so.

Here's some more info about Shogen Okabayashi, who received DR kyoju dairi, and was a student of Tokimune Takeda and Hisa Takuma:

The Hakuhokai, as has been said, is headed by a Kyoju Daiiri of Tokimune Takeda and, at least technically, is "legitimate".

Yes, I know about those groups, just as far as I knew previously, the only branches that had anything to do with the USA were the Daitokan and the Roppokai.

I wonder if there is not a mistake about Okabayashi Sensei having received a kyoju dairi from Tokimune Takeda Sensei. I don't think this is correct. Perhaps someone from this group could clarify the situation.

I believe some members of this board are familiar with this group from a study group in Penn. Perhaps some of them could comment on the linneage issues?

Respectfully,

If memory serves, Okabayashi received kyoju dairi from Hisa Takuma in 1976. He belonged to Takumakai for many years before setting out on his own in '95.

Information on the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area Hakuho Kai study group is available at
www.ittendojo.org/daito-ry.htm

while the text of a lecture by Okabayashi Sensei is posted at
www.ittendojo.org/articles/absolute.htm

The pages were reviewed and approved by the Hakuho Kai, so while we don't ourselves possess any documentation and are not in a position to answer detailed questions, we're confident the following general description is accurate:

"Okabayashi Shogen studied Daito-ryu under both Hisa Takuma and Takeda Tokimune, receiving from the former a kyoju-dairi (teaching license) and from the latter a shihan-level license, as well as a menkyo in Ono-ha Itto-ryu (Sokaku-den)."

Okabayashi Sensei will be visiting our dojo this year for seminars on March 29, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and on March 30, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. We anticipate training both days will be open to the public -- to request additional information or to receive a seminar flier when they are published, please e-mail me at ittendojocho@cs.com.

Hi Guys,

I train at the Hako Hokai Branch dojo in Britain and have met Okabayashi sensei on many occasions.

The story of his training as far as I know is this.

He originally studied at the Takuma Kai under Takuma Hisa and it is from him that he received his Kyoju Daiiri.

Just before Takuma Hisa's death Okabayashi was going to leave the Takuma Kai because he did not want to learn from anyone else. Hisa persuaded him to visit Tokimune and continue his study with him. At this time Okabayashi began travelling to learn from Tokimune on a very regular basis and bringing the techniques that he learned back to the Takuma Kai.

Okabayashi was one of the Key figures at the Takuma Kai and was very concerned that the quality of the Daito Ryu practised there was slipping.

After Tokimune’s death he began to consider setting up his own branch dojo in attempt to preserve the pure Daito Ryu that he had learned from Hisa and Tokimune.

Eventually he set up the Hakuho Kai in order to achieve this preservation, teaching Ono Ha Itto Ryu and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.

This is what was told to me by my teacher and Okabayashi (a very humble and skilful man)

Okabayashi’s powers with Aikinojutsu and Aikinage are truly astonishing, he is one of the most skilful martial artists that I have met.

Thanks.

Chris
